The “TELBio: Teaching English Learners Biology” NSF Robert Noyce Scholarship grant focuses on recruiting strong biology students into Kennesaw State University's Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program, adding an endorsement in teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). The Noyce project's goal is to develop more teachers who have strong content knowledge of biology and the knowledge and skills to teach English learners. Noyce Scholars may begin the program either their final year working toward a B.S. in Biology, or as a career-changer (after receiving an undergraduate degree in biology). Scholars can receive $5000/semester as part of the MAT program, up to $20,000. Scholars also receive an iPad mini and participate in a Noyce Scholar professional development community throughout their program. Upon graduation, Noyce Scholars are required to teach in a high-needs school for 1 year for every $5000 they receive in scholarship funding.
As a part of this project, we are developing a podcast series (“Telling Biology”) in collaboration with our candidates. Our teacher candidates can use the podcasting series as a tool in their classrooms, both to teach about academic language and to gain understanding about student assets for learning. Anyone can use the podcasting materials, with appropriate attribution!
